When many people first get into watches, they think they are joining a strange little hobby that few people around them will ever understand. To be fair, most of your friends and family probably are going to think it is a little weird that you spend so much time talking about watches, researching watches, and staring at watches.
What many people do not realize is that there is a large community of enthusiasts out there who are doing the exact same thing.
Like any hobby, the watch community is made up of all kinds of people. You have the snobs, the people who simply do not care about brands and only see watches as tools, and everyone in between. The great thing is that there is room for all of them.
We all enjoy the same hobby, even if we enjoy it for different reasons. Some people collect for history, some for craftsmanship, some for investment, and some because they simply need a reliable tool on their wrist. Tastes are always going to vary, and there are very few things the entire watch community will agree on. That is perfectly fine. In many ways, that diversity is what makes the hobby interesting.
What I have found over the years is that the watch community can be one of the most supportive groups of people you will ever encounter.
Recently, the Anachronist YouTube channel shared information about some of the medical struggles that Wrist Daddy has been dealing with and encouraged people to support him. Seeing the outpouring of support, kind words, and encouragement was something special. It is not every day that you see a community rally around someone like that.
I have also personally experienced this side of the community.
I am an active member of the Sketchy Boyz Watch Club on Facebook and Instagram, and over the past year I have shared some of my own medical struggles with the group. In late October of 2025 I suffered a stroke. More recently, I have been dealing with additional medical issues involving my heart that require further testing and evaluation.
Throughout all of this, the support from the watch community has been incredible. From comments on posts to private messages checking in, the amount of encouragement and genuine concern from people has been amazing. It has helped keep my spirits high and my mindset moving in a positive direction during a difficult time.
That experience reminded me of something important.
Many people get into watches because they enjoy the watches themselves. What they often discover is that the people can be just as important as the watches.
That is what I hope to build with my own content and community.
I want Instruments of Carry to be a place that welcomes new members the same way so many people welcomed me. Whether someone owns a $20 Timex or a $100,000 Patek Philippe, there should be a place for them at the table.
For those who are new to watches, I hope this article shows that there is more to the hobby than specifications, movements, and collections. There are real people behind these watches, and many of them are genuinely good people who are willing to help, encourage, and support others.
Rich or poor, user or collector, there is something in this hobby for everyone.
Like anything else in life, you often get out of it what you put into it. If we continue to welcome new people, support each other, and share our experiences, this community will continue to be one of the best parts of the hobby.
Watches may bring us into the hobby, but it is often the people who make us stay.
