Battle of GADA’s

I have written in the past about how I never really liked the term GADA. To me, it always seemed like a strange concept because I believed a watch should fill a specialized role—a diver should dive, a chronograph should time events, and a dress watch should dress up. Lately, though, my opinion has changed. I found myself in situations where my daily dive watch felt out of place, which led me to give the GADA concept another honest chance.

I’ve owned a number of GADA-style watches over the years, including the Seiko Alpinist, Citizen Tsuyosa, Watchdives Elementum, Seiko SARB, Erebus Ascent, and several others. They all eventually found their way out of my collection because I never gave them a fair opportunity. Recently, however, I’ve spent much more time wearing this style of watch, and I’ve come to appreciate just how versatile a well-executed GADA piece can be.

Today I’m comparing the two GADA watches that have impressed me the most in 2026: the Seiko Prospex SPB249 ‘Deep Lake’ and the Longines Conquest 38mm.

The Seiko SPB249 ‘Deep Lake’

The SPB249 won me over almost immediately. I have owned several Alpinists over the years, but they always felt a little too busy for my taste. The SPB249 fixes that with a clean textured blue dial that adds depth without becoming distracting. At 38mm, it lands right in my preferred size range and wears exceptionally well.

The bracelet is noticeably better than what many people expect from Seiko, the finishing is excellent for the price, and the LumiBrite is among the best in the business. My wife—who normally couldn’t care less about watches—immediately commented on how much she liked this one. That alone made it memorable.

The Longines Conquest 38mm

The Conquest had been on my radar for quite some time. After my heart attack, my wife and I committed to bringing back regular date days, and during one of those trips we stopped into a Longines dealer. The moment I tried on the 38mm, I knew it was the right size. After comparing colors, the green dial stood out immediately.

The thinner case, outstanding bracelet, excellent finishing, and L888.5 movement all contribute to making the Conquest feel like a step above. During the drive home I couldn’t stop looking at it.

Conclusion

These two watches accomplish the same goal through different philosophies. The SPB249 is the rugged, adventure-ready GADA that emphasizes capability, value, and practicality. The Longines Conquest is the refined everyday GADA that brings higher-end finishing, a better bracelet, and a slimmer profile.

Neither watch is objectively better in every category. The Seiko wins on lume, water resistance, and overall value. The Longines wins on movement, bracelet, finishing, and refinement. If I could only keep one, my choice would be the Longines Conquest 38mm. It simply fits my current style and where my collection has evolved. That said, the SPB249 remains one of the best values in modern GADA watches and is a watch I have no intention of letting go.
